5 IMPORTANT “DON’TS” TO OBSERVE FOR YOUR CAR

Your car is your second biggest investment. Unless, like me, you have no home – then it would be your first. Although it’s a depreciating value, it’s still a great cash cow when you need one. So taking pristine care of your ride is more than just for slowing down the wear and tear of your vehicle – you’ll be upping the value of your asset should you choose to sell it off sometime in the future. Here’s a few pointers to observe:

DO NOT SHIFT THE GEAR TO NEUTRAL AT RED LIGHTS (UNLESS IT’S A MANUAL)

In fact, there is no proper research showing that this move saves a significant amount of gas, and shifting your gears from Drive to Neutral would actually cause more wear and tear on your linkage and transmission of your car. So keep your foot on the brakes and do nothing, unless your car is a manual drive, in which case you should be keeping it on neutral. (Image via quora.com)

DO NOT HANG THE WORLD ON YOUR CAR-KEY KEYCHAIN

149375803_5a29926f02_oIt’s quite a tradition to hang all the other keys in your life together with your car keys, although it may not be as insignificant and innocent as you think. Apart from being completely screwed if your car keys are stolen or lost, the weight from these keys and keychains, combines with the force of it moving and bouncing while you’re on the road, can cause excessive strain to your ignition switch and ultimately lead to an ignition switch failure. So keep it light when it comes to your car keys. (Image via rashbre2.blogspot.com)

DO NOT REV THE CAR TO WARM IT UP

exhaust1-630x427One common myth of driving is that you need to warm your car up by idling it or revving it first before driving it out. This is false. The car warms up faster as you’re driving it than when it’s idling. Revving the car is a very harmful practice and can add years of unnecessary wear and tear to your car engine. In fact, for the first 10 – 20 minutes (depending on the temperature) don’t be too rough on your acceleration and braking. (Image via 999thepoint.com)

DO NOT TURN THE STEERING WHEELS WHILE THE CAR IS STATIONARY

But when you can help it, always move your car slightly while turning your steering wheels. This will preserve the wear on your tyres, as well as your power steering function. DO NOT PUMP FUEL IF THE PETROL TANKER HAS JUST REFILLED

article-2121984-12661E52000005DC-902_634x368If you happen to see a petrol tanker just refilling the fuel at a petrol station, head out and pump your fuel in another station. When the underground tankers are being refilled, the sediments would be stirred up and could end up in your fuel tank, which can cause damage to the fuel injectors and clog the fuel filters, thus quickening the need for repair work.
